This year’s squad features many players from the Columbus, Ohio, area, including captain Amber Kern (who played her high school soccer at Dublin Coffman), and Kelly DeNiro (Bishop Watterson).
Most of the first 17 women are from the Columbus area, but notable exceptions are WPSL All-Stars Lisa Nouanesengsy (Huber Heights, Ohio) and Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.), as well as Summer Bourcier (Mansfield, Ohio), Eryn Weber (Ashland, Ohio), and Micaela Powers (Beavercreek, Ohio). Powers is a first-year Eagle, having played her college soccer at the University of Wisconsin. She’s also been picked multiple times as a United States national team player at different age levels.
The club also gains some international flare by welcoming Lila Remache of Taverny, France, to the Eagles for the first time. Remache is a graduate assistant at Capital University, working with the women’s soccer team. Other first-time Eagles include Ashley Gogolin, Megan Minnix, and goalkeepers Hannah Sargent and Jenna Villacres. Sargent is a sophomore at Western Michigan University and Villacres – the youngest player on the roster – is a student at Westerville South High School.
The first wave of roster announcements is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Hannah Sargent (Lewis Center, Ohio/Western Michigan University), Jenna Villacres (Westerville, Ohio)
Defenders: Summer Bourcier (Mansfield, Ohio), Monique Hanayik (Sidney, Ohio), Amber Kern (Dublin, Ohio), Megan Minnix (Columbus, Ohio)
Midfielders: Alexa Cheripko (Westerville, Ohio), Kelly DeNiro (Columbus, Ohio), Ashley Gogolin (Gahanna, Ohio), Larissa Najjar (Columbus, Ohio), Lisa Nouanesengsy (Huber Heights, Ohio), Micaela Powers (Beavercreek, Ohio), Lila Remache (Taverny, France), Christy Zwolski (Libertyville, Ill.)
Forward: Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.), Rachel MacLeod (Westerville, Ohio), Eryn Weber (Ashland, Ohio)
Long-time Eagles defender Deidre Abouahmed will unfortunately be unavailable for the season due to a knee injury she suffered in the team’s final preseason match. She’s had successful surgery to repair the issue and the club wishes her all the best in her recovery.
Despite her being on the club’s roster, Christy Zwolski also won’t be available for this WPSL season. The midfielder shined for the Eagles in the club’s preseason matches and could rejoin the team as early as the fall.
The WPSL mandates that its teams have no more than 30 players, so head coach Daniel Seiffert and the Eagles coaching staff have more roster spots to announce in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned to the club’s website and social media platforms for more information.
