Three Columbus Eagles FC players were named to the WPSL’s East Region All-Conference teams, which were announced by the league announced Thursday. Defender Megan Minnix and midfielder Ashley Gogolin made the Ohio Valley’s All-Conference team in their first season with the Eagles, and defender and captain Amber Kern earned her second consecutive All-Conference distinction.
All three players played a big part in helping the Eagles to their best-ever finish in the WPSL, setting records for goals scored (19), fewest goals conceded (8), points (17), and league wins (5).
Minnix, the 29-year-old University of Charlotte graduate, was a standout in the center of defense in 2018. Her leadership and skill helped the Eagles to the club’s best-ever defensive record and four clean sheets out of eight league matches. She also notched an assist in Columbus’s 4-0 win over Empire United in June.
Gogolin, a Gahanna, Ohio native and Wright State University graduate, started in midfield for every one of the Eagles’ eight league matches in 2018. The 24-year-old was tied for the team lead in assists and helped make up the most talented Columbus midfield in club history.
Kern had her best statistical season as an Eagle, leading the team in goals and assists in 2018. The 26-year-old University of Akron graduate was named the club’s captain prior to the season, and her on-field skills certainly helped the Eagles secure second place in the division and all sorts of club records. Kern is one of the longest-tenured Eagles players, and she leads by example on and off the pitch.
The club finished up its 2018 WPSL season in July with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh, clinching second place in the division in the process.
